Joshua Slocum attended school for the first time in this one-room schoolhouse in Mount Hanley, Nova Scotia. The original school building still stands and is operated as the Mt. Hanley School Museum.
Slocombe Cemetery
Joshua Slocum’s father was John Slocombe and he came from several generations of Slocombe men who lived in Mount Hanley. All cemeteries are technically public sites, but this cemetery is only accessible through private land. While it is possible to get to the Slocombe cemetery, and we encourage descendants and family members to do so, we suggest tourists visit the two area museums or to venture to Brier Island instead.

Macdonald Museum
The Macdonald Museum is located at 21 School Street in Middleton. As an important area museum in Annapolis Valley, there is a special Slocum display on-site. The Joshua Slocum Society has provided a loan of a model ship “Spray” for use in their display.
