In his final years, Joshua Slocum lived in a house on land in Martha’s Vineyard. This is where he tried his hand at farming, but also kept his boat nearby before setting on his final voyage from the vineyard on November 14, 1909.

This museum has several Slocum items in its archives. It is a wonderful community museum with several unique artifacts.

This is the only house on land that Joshua Slocum ever purchased and lived in. It is located in West Tisbury. The plaque reads: CAPT. JOSHUA SLOCUM IN 1895 SAILED ALONE AROUND THE WORLD IN HIS 36-FOOT SLOOP SPRAY. HIS LAST YEARS WERE LIVED IN THIS HOUSE. LOST AT SEA 1909. DUKES COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY 1965

Slocum kept his boat in Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard. The image above was taken in approximately 1900. Photographer unknown.
